The Society for the Advancement of ICT & Comparative Knowledge (https://socthadick.org) is pleased to announce an essay competition for high school students as part of her 2021 conference and Annual Meeting (SOCTHADICKconf’21) scheduled to hold from 17th October, 2021 to 20th October, 2021. An essay competition and software/final year undergraduate project competition are also available to students of higher institutions (universities, polytechnics and colleges of education). Details on the competitions are provided below.

ESSAY COMPETITION (SECONDARY SCHOOL & HIGHER INSTITUTION CATEGORIES): SOCTHADICKconf’21

GENERAL RULES OF THE COMPETITION

The Society for the Advancement of ICT & Comparative Knowledge (SOCTHADICK) (https://socthadick.org), is an international intellectual association devoted to non-trivial studies on all issues pertaining to ICT, comparative knowledge systems and their inter-relationship. The Society is meant for ‘literates’ and ‘illiterates’, and activities of the Society are devoid of parochial ethnic, racial, sectional, and socio-economic and related bias. The motto of the Society is ‘Knowledge is Power’.

The Society is holding her 2021 Regular Conference & Annual Meeting (SOCTHADICKconf’21) (Physical and Virtual modes) from 17th – 20th October, 2021. The host/venue is the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Kogi State University, Anyigba, Nigeria. The theme of the conference is ‘Towards a Unification of Global Knowledge Systems using the Prism of Information and Communication Technology’.

As part of the conference, knowing the importance of secondary and higher education in the transformation of a developing nation, the Society is organizing essay competitions for students in the secondary and higher institution categories, respectively. The topic of the competitions is ‘The Role of ICT in Engendering Mutual Understanding, Security and Peace in the Society’. It is a zero registration fee competition in each of the categories, with prizes to be awarded to the best entries. All participants will receive certificates of participation.

Entries are already open in the secondary school and higher institution categories. Highlights of the rules are as follows:

  • For the secondary category, the minimum length of an essay should be 1,000 words, while it is 5,000 words in the higher institution category.
  • All students irrespective of ownership of school, tribe, religion, level, state of origin, nationality, course of study etc are free to participate.
  • Every submission shall be clearly accompanied by basic information on the competitor. These include full name (with surname clearly indicated), age, school/institution, class/level, nationality, state of origin, school contact address (i.e. phone, email etc; in case there is need to verify information submitted) etc.
  • Essay may be submitted via email to ‘info.socthadick@gmail.com’ (with subject ‘Essay, High School Category’ OR ‘Essay, Higher Institution category’, as appropriate). Alternatively, the essay may be addressed to: Chairman, SOCTHADICKconf21 Essay Competition, % Head, Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Kogi State University, Anyigba, Nigeria.
  • Deadline for receiving the essay in either category is 1st October, 2021.
  • A panel of independent judges will evaluate all submissions for the winning entries.
  • The panel of judges will be guided by basic rules such as content, originality, coherence, clarity, grammatical accuracy and adherence to general guidelines of the competition.
  • The panel of judges may use any appropriate procedure to determine the genuineness of the authorships of submitted entries.
  • The decision of the panel of judges is final, and the panel may not be engaged in litigation as to why any submission is not a winning entry. However, upon enquiry after the competition, the panel may be willing to provide information on the strength and weakness of a submitted entry.

SOFTWARE & FINAL YEAR UNDERGRADUATE PROJECT COMPETITION: SOCTHADICKconf’21

It is a zero registration fee competition, with prizes to be awarded to the best entries. All participants will receive certificates of participation. Also, the academic departments or institutions of all competitors will receive certificate of recognition.

Entries are already open. Highlights of the rules are as follows:

  • All higher institution students – universities, polytechnics, colleges of education – irrespective of tribe, religion, level, state of origin, nationality, course of study etc are free to participate.
  • Every submission shall be clearly accompanied by general information on the competitor. These include full name (with surname clearly indicated), age, institution, class/level, nationality, state of origin, contact address of institution (i.e. phone, email etc; in case there is need to verify information submitted), year of graduation etc. The title/topic/theme of software and/or final year undergraduate project should also be clearly stated.
  • The software and/or final year undergraduate project per se should  contain the following:
  • Title, theme or topic
  • Copious documentation and explanation on its technical content (including methodology and programming language used)
  • Cover page and signed certification page (with name and signature of the supervisor), in case of undergraduate project
  • Year of (formal) completion of the software or project
  • Supervisor, coach or mentor of the software development or project
  • A stand-alone functioning software and/or a completed final year undergraduate project should be submitted
  • Evidence that the competitor is the copyright/authentic owner of the submitted entry
  • Final year undergraduate projects completed within the past five (5) years are eligible for the competition.
  • The software package or final year undergraduate project entry may be submitted via email to ‘info.socthadick@gmail.com’ (with subject ‘Software Entry’ OR ‘Final Year Undergraduate Project entry, as appropriate).
